Deadline Fast Approaching for Bid4Birds Habitat Program

Next Monday, January 11, is the deadline for the spring 2021 Bid4Birds habitat program through the California Ricelands Waterbird Foundation. You can apply through the Foundation website.

Key Elements of the Program include:

  • Incentive payments for growers to implement shallow flooding for shorebirds
  • Contracts: 4-10 week commitments
  • Timeline: February 15 through May 31
    • Habitat in late March and April is most valuable 
  • Flooding: maximum of 4″ throughout contract period
  • Post-harvest straw management required
  • 75 acres minimum
  • Contracts are ranked on timing, habitat quality, and price

Rice Levee Program – Enrollment Now Open

California Waterfowl Association (CWA) will be soliciting applications for the Rice Levee Program starting on September 25, 2023. This program is funded by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, through the Nesting Bird Habitat Incentive Program, which allows rice farmers to submit bids for the management of their internal levees for upland nesting bird species (Mallard, Gadwall and Pheasant). To participate in this program, rice levees must be reconstructed before January 1st or left from previous growing season. Enrolled levees must be left undisturbed until July 15th.
