Application Deadline Fast Approaching for Bid4Birds

The California Ricelands Waterbird Foundation is currently soliciting applications for the Bid4Birds habitat program this fall. Applications are submitted through the Foundation website and the enrollment period closes on Wednesday, June 22, 2022

Key Details:

  • Incentive payments for growers to implement shallow flooding for shorebirds
    • Payment rates vary and are generated by the grower, based on the costs of providing the habitat. 
  • Contracts: 3-4 week commitments
  • Timeline: July 15 through October 1
  • Flooding: maximum of 4″ throughout contract period
  • Field preparations required
  • Contracts are ranked on timing, habitat quality, and price

New Fish Food Program Applications Open Now

Reclamation District 108 (RD108) and California Trout are soliciting applications for the Fish Food Program, which pays rice farmers and wetland managers to flood their fields for a few weeks and drain the water (full of food) to fish-bearing waterways to benefit out migrating salmon while providing wintering and migratory bird habitat. Landowners do not have to be in RD 108 to apply.

Application deadline is September 10, 2023.
