Conservation Programs Workshop – August 13

Are you interested in finding out more about the variety of conservation programs that are currently available for rice producers? The California Rice Commission is hosting a workshop tomorrow, Tuesday August 13, to discuss all the programs including: Bid4Birds, BirdReturns, California Winter Rice Habitat Incentive Program, Fish Food Program, Nesting Bird Habitat Incentive Program and more!

Workshop speakers will provide an overview of each program and there will be many opportunities for questions. Refreshments will be provided and no RSVP is required.

Winter flooding programs available:

  1. BirdReturns-Sandhill Crane Habitat Program: https://birdreturns.org/program/sandhillcranes/. Includes Flooded and Non-flooded fields for a minimum of 8 weeks between Oct 1 and Mar 15. Applications open until August 20. Note: hunting is not permitted during enrollment period. Payment rate is $95/acre.
  2. Fish Food Program: https://calricewaterbirds.org/fish-food/. Pulsed flooding Oct to April. Applications open Aug 13 to Sep 4. Payment rates vary (bids).
  3. California Winter Rice Habitat Incentive Program: https://calricewaterbirds.org/cwrhip/. As of today, there is some funding available ($250,000), with details still being worked out. Website will be updated as details emerge.

We want to thank the following partner organizations for their support of the rice footprint report written by UC Davis earlier this year. As the report clearly states, working ricelands provide critical habitat in a state that has lost more than 90% of its once-abundant wetlands. Rice, especially rice flooded in the winter, is essential to more than 200 species and is the backbone of the Pacific Flyway.

Rice Levee, Road Edge, and Ag Corridor Program – Reminder

California Waterfowl Association (CWA) is currently soliciting applications for the Rice Levee, Road Edge, and Ag Corridor Program. This program is funded by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, through the Nesting Bird Habitat Incentive Program, which pays private landowners 80 cents per linear foot for the management of their internal rice levees or road edges for upland nesting bird species (Mallard, Gadwall and Pheasant).
