Conservation Programs in Rice Workshop this Wednesday, August 13

Are you interested in finding out more about the variety of conservation programs that are currently available for rice producers? The California Rice Commission is hosting an upcoming workshop to discuss all the programs, including: Bid4BirdsBirdReturnsCalifornia Winter Rice Habitat Incentive ProgramNesting Bird Habitat Incentive Program, and more! Workshop speakers will provide an overview of each program and there will be many opportunities for questions. Refreshments will be provided and no RSVP is required.

Winter flooding programs available:

  1. BirdReturns-Sandhill Crane Habitat Program: Includes flooded and non-flooded fields for a minimum of 8 weeks between September 29 and December 31. Applications open until August 17. Note: hunting is not permitted on flooded fields during the contract period. Payment rate is $95/acre.
  2. California Winter Rice Habitat Incentive Program: Provides fixed-rate payments for flooding of harvested rice fields for 70 continuous days between October and March. Payment rates are $15/acre on the East side of the Sacramento Valley and $30/acre on the West side. Applications open until September 8.

Rice Levee, Road Edge, and Ag Corridor Program – Reminder

California Waterfowl Association (CWA) is currently soliciting applications for the Rice Levee, Road Edge, and Ag Corridor Program. This program is funded by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, through the Nesting Bird Habitat Incentive Program, which pays private landowners 80 cents per linear foot for the management of their internal rice levees or road edges for upland nesting bird species (Mallard, Gadwall and Pheasant).
