About the Program

The Fish Food program incentivizes growers to pulse-flood their ricelands or wetlands during the winter to support native fishes by exporting the zooplankton grown on floodplains back into the river. This program is run and administered by California Trout but is currently searching for funding.

Participants are required to flood rice fields or wetlands to at least 10 inches of water and then wait 3 or more weeks for the invertebrate communities to develop in this floodplain. The bug-rich water is then drained back into the river where the fish are. This cycle can be repeated up to 3 times over the course of a winter. Concurrent enrollment in NRCS and CWRHIP programs is allowed. Payment rates for this program vary as it is run as a reverse auction – interested growers submit bids that are informed by their unique costs and individual circumstances.
