Application Deadline Extended for Bid4Birds

The California Ricelands Waterbird Foundation is currently soliciting applications for the Bid4Birds habitat program this spring. Applications are submitted through the Foundation website and the enrollment period will now close on Friday, January 19, 2024 at 6pm

Key Details:

  • Incentive payments for growers to implement shallow flooding for shorebirds
    • Payment rates vary and are generated by the grower, based on the costs of providing the habitat. 
  • Contracts: 4 to 12 week commitments
  • Timeline: February 15 to April 30, 2024
  • Flooding: maximum of 4 inches throughout contract period
  • Field preparations required
  • Contracts are ranked on timing, habitat quality, and price (flooding later ranks higher)

The Migratory Bird Conservation Partnership (Audubon California, The Nature Conservancy, and Point Blue Conservation Science), in collaboration with the California Rice Commission and the Delta Conservancy, and with funding from the California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, is now accepting online bids for the BirdReturns-Late Summer Farmlands Habitat Program. This program offers farmers and landowners in the Sacramento Valley an opportunity to receive financial compensation for providing a few weeks of ponded or shallow flooded habitat for migratory birds.
