Seeking growers interested in providing nesting habitat on ricelands

Seeking growers interested in providing nesting habitat on ricelands

The California Ricelands Waterbird Foundation is working to expand the field testing of aerial seeding of cover crops into winter-flooded rice fields that are drawing down at the end of the flood season. These fields would provide late-season nesting opportunities for locally breeding ducks such as Mallards, Gadwalls, and Cinnamon Teals.

Interested growers should:

  • Consider fields already planned for idling in 2025.
  • Have at least some experience with managing cover crops.
  • Allow CRC and California Waterfowl Association biologists to monitor the field for nesting bird use.
