Application Deadline Fast Approaching for Bid4Birds

The California Ricelands Waterbird Foundation is currently soliciting applications for the spring Bid4Birds habitat program. Applications are submitted through the Foundation website and the enrollment period closes on Sunday, January 14, 2024. 

Key Details:

  • Incentive payments for growers to implement shallow flooding for shorebirds
    • Payment rates vary and are generated by the grower, based on the costs of providing the habitat. 
  • Contracts: 4 to 12 week commitments
  • Timeline: February 15 to April 30, 2024
  • Flooding: maximum of 4 inches throughout contract period
  • Field preparations required
  • Contracts are ranked on timing, habitat quality, and price (flooding later ranks higher)

Application Period Closing for Nesting Bird Habitat Incentive Program 

The Nesting Bird Habitat Incentive Program is still accepting applications for the Delayed Cereal Grain Harvest and Fallow Agriculture programs until end of day Wednesday, April 10. If you have winter planted cereal grains, winter planted cover crops or farm fields that will be left fallow this growing season, these programs could be a great fit for your operations. You must be willing to leave them undisturbed and or delay harvest until at least July 15th. Below are key details for each of the program.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife, in partnership with the California Waterfowl Association (CWA) is currently accepting applications for two nesting bird programs: Delayed Cereal Grain Harvest and Fallow Agriculture. If you have winter planted cereal grains, winter planted cover crops or farm fields that will be left fallow this growing season, these programs could be a great fit for your operations.
